At a ceremony Saturday, the US Navy apologized for bombarding the Alaskan native village of Kake in the late 1860s, The Guardian reported. “This has been 155 years in the making,” said Joel Jackson, the president of the Organized Village of Kake, of the apology. “It’s becoming real because we never talked about it and now we are.”
The Navy will also apologize to the Lingit First Nation—also known as the Tlingit people—for following up the bombarding of Kake with a second assault on Angoon in 1882. Rear Adm. Mark Sucato offered the first apology and it’s anticipated he will be on hand to deliver the second that is planned for Oct. 26—the 142nd anniversary of the Angoon bombardment.
