The U.S. added 177,000 jobs in April, better than expected and despite a worsening economic outlook, in a boost for President Donald Trump after surprise data earlier in the week that the economy shrank in the first three months of the year.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), which reported the data, said the unemployment rate also held firm at 4.2 percent. Hiring was down slightly from a revised 185,000 in March and came in above economists' expectations for a modest 135,000.
Employment was ticking up broadly across the private sector, while it was down with the federal government.
