A Republican campaign volunteer was brutally beaten by people who said Republicans 'weren't allowed' in their area, Florida GOP Senator Marco Rubio said on Monday morning.

The canvasser was clad in Rubio's campaign gear and that of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, the senator said.

'Last night one of our canvassers wearing my T-shirt and a Desantis[sic] hat was brutally attacked by 4 animals who told him Republicans weren’t allowed in their neighborhood,' Rubio wrote on Twitter.

'He suffered internal bleeding, a broken jaw & will need facial reconstructive surgery.'

Later that same day police in Hialea, Florida arrested a 22-year-old suspect named Javier Lopez, according to a statement sent to DailyMail.com. However, it made no mention of the political animosity Rubio described.

Lopez told the 27-year-old volunteer that 'he was not allowed to walk on the sidewalk and pass out fliers in his neighborhood,' according to Hialea Police Sergeant Jose Torres.
