Labour leader Keir Starmer has struck a "pilot" agreement to repatriate illegal migrants back to France, in return for accepting individuals as asylum seekers, in an effort to stem the tide of small boat crossings. In a joint address with French President Emmanuel Macron, Starmer revealed that the new strategy would be implemented in the upcoming weeks.
The initial "one-in, one-out" arrangement will see approximately 50 migrants returned to France weekly. Asylum seekers arriving via legal channels from Europe will be "subject to strict security checks", and only those who haven't attempted illegal entry will be considered.
Starmer stated: "This will show others trying to make the same journey that it will be in vain, and the jobs they have been promised in the UK will no longer exist because of the nationwide crackdown we're delivering on illegal working which is on a completely unprecedented scale."
