Firefighter killed while battling NY/NJ wildfire in Sterling Forest

An 18-year-old volunteer firefighter was killed by a falling tree on Saturday while battling a wildfire spanning the border between North Jersey and New York in Sterling Forest.

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation said in a statement on Sunday that Dariel Vasquez, a member of the Wildland Fire Crew, was fatally injured when the tree fell. Lifesaving measures were administered at the scene but were unsuccessful.

Vasquez was a parks and recreation aide employed by the department. Sterling Forest is in Greenwood Lake, New York. The fire is also burning in West Milford.

Vasquez was a volunteer firefighter, a post on Facebook from the nearby Warwick, New York, Fire Department said. The New York State Police are investigating his death.
